Dogs may be man’s best friend, but don’t forget the cats… both species are part of the family, after all.
There are several things you can do for your dog or cat (or dogs and cats) to ensure they are healthy, happy and well cared for. You own them, you are responsible and they look to you (ever notice those puppy dog eyes?) for everything they need. Of course, cats often act like they own you, but that’s a topic for another time.
Get the exams
Your pets may be the indoor-only variety, but a regular visit to your veterinarian helps ward off sickness, diseases and other maladies that can afflict your faithful pets. Did you know that your pets need dental work from time to time? They can’t tell you they have a toothache, but if their appetite is diminished or they seem sluggish, a bad tooth could be the cause. Your veterinarian knows how to find out.
If your pets go outdoors — and even if they don’t because critters can be brought in — you must check them for fleas and ticks. Are your pets scratching a lot? It could be they are being bitten. Your veterinarian can recommend a quality neck collar that should help, but there are other treatments as well. Who would want to be continually bitten by a bug? You don’t. Neither does Fido or Fluffy.
Watch the weight
For your pets, that is. People know how to use a scale and how to control their caloric intake. Your pets don’t. Some dogs eat anything put in front of them. Ask your veterinarian how much food each pet should eat. No, they won’t suffer, and they will act like they are starving, but your vet knows best.
